摘要:
Just one second after the Big Bang, neutrinos decoupled from the hot plasma of the Universe, forming the cosmic neutrino background (CνB). As the Universe expands, the temperature of these relics have cooled to about 1.95 K, even lower than that of the cosmic microwave background. Because relic neutrinos have extremely low energies and interact only through the weak force, their direct detection is extremely challenging. The sensitivity of the PTOLEMY experiment, which is the most promising proposal so far, is limited by the quantum uncertainty principle. As a result, coherent scattering methods have attracted renewed interest: CνB can undergo coherent scatterings with macroscopic target materials, leading to an enhancement of the cross section on the order of Avogadro's number. However, in conventional coherent scatterings, the recoil momentum is averaged among a large number of atoms, making the signal difficult to observe. This talk will introduce a new coherent scattering process. When CνB scatter off cold atomic or molecular energy levels, they can generate an observable parametric fluorescence effect. Resonance can also occur when the neutrino energy matches the energy-level splitting of the molecule. This mechanism offers a new possible approach for the direct detection of CνB.
