The physics discipline of South China Normal University was recognized as a national "Double First-Class" discipline in 2017, with particle physics and nuclear physics being the key development direction in the university's "Double First-Class" construction plan. Professor Wang Enke, the president of the university, leads the team of physics faculty, which was selected as the third batch of "Huang Danian-style teacher teams" among national universities.

The Institute of Quantum Matter was established in July 2018, with Professor Wang Enke serving as the inaugural director. The institute primarily focuses on five research directions within the fields of particle physics and nuclear physics: heavy-ion collision physics, phenomenology in particle physics, nuclear structure, high-energy physics experiments, and lattice field theory. The institute has also gradually expanded into new interdisciplinary research areas, such as cross-disciplinary studies with quantum computing and machine learning, forming a promising momentum of coordinated development in multiple directions.

Adopting a model of interdisciplinary integration, the institute has focused on organized scientific research, achieving significant results. Collaborating with the School of Physics, the institute co-built research platforms, leading to the approval of the "Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Nuclear Science" in 2019. It also gained approval for the university's first Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory—the "Guangdong-Hong Kong Joint Laboratory on Quantum Matter" in 2020. Furthermore, it was granted the "Key Laboratory of Atomic and Subatomic Structure and Quantum Control (MOE)" by the Ministry of Education and the "Guangdong Basic Research Center of Excellence for Structure and Fundamental Interactions of Matter" in 2023. South China Normal University, in collaboration with the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, established the Southern Nuclear Science Computing Center, which has completed its first phase of construction with a computing power of 2.3 PFlops, providing high-quality computing resources for the domestic nuclear physics field.

The institute is deeply involved in international cooperation and has officially become a member of the LHCb and CMS Collaborations at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, the BESIII Collaborations at the Beijing Positron Electron Collider, and the STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in the United States.

The development of the Institute of Quantum Matter will contribute to the construction of first-class discipline in physics at South China Normal University and the development of high-level university in Guangdong Province. It aims to meet the demand for basic research in physics from Guangdong Province and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, providing strong support for the innovation-driven strategy and economic and social transformation of Guangdong Province.
